10 Reasons to Travel Solo

Spread the love

In the last 2 years I have been on 74 planes! I traveled to places I have never been to and others places a couple of times, I collected over 150,000 Frequent Flyer Miles, packed up my things way too many times and all of this except for 2 trips, were all alone. People always ask me how do I do it? Aren’t you scared? Don’t you get bored? What is it like? Well to be honest with you, it’s actually the best! Here is why: 10 Reasons to Travel SOLO!

1.Gives you time to reflect on life- One of my favorite things to do while traveling solo is reflecting on my life. Figuring out if this is where I wanna be at this point in life, planning out my future, filtering all the good and bad, trying to solve problems I’m currently dealing with, thinking about all the great things I have in my life. It’s a very nice to have some quiet time from life and to have some time to think alone. You just come back home with your soul’s battery fully charged.

2.You can go at own pace- Growing up I went on many family vacations, if there is one thing I can’t stand, it’s my mom rushing me through everything. If I stopped for a few minutes at a store and told her to hold on…. Well, better luck finding her because she never waits and then I spend a good 10-15mins looking for her before realizing she is about 100 feet ahead of me, if not more (I love you mommy but its so annoying lol). When you’re traveling solo you’re going at your own pace, you like this store, spend all the time in the world exploring it, saw what you were looking for in that museum, move on, feel like getting lost in this little amazing town, do it! It’s your world! Sometimes I power walk and sometimes I can stand in one spot forever. You pick, you choose.

3.Sleeping in- Let’s face it, there is nothing like waking up whenever you feel like it. When I’m on vacation, I like to see and do anything and everything in the city I am at. I’ve never been a morning person yet when I’m traveling I do wake up early. However, sometimes you feel like being lazy and sleeping in without someone waking you up or you woke-up not feeling well and you need your time. This makes solo traveling so much more relaxing. You can also take a nap whenever you feel like because you’ve walked all day and your feet hurt or because you woke up too early.

4.You meet more people-  Also one of the reasons to travel solo and this is probably my favorite part. It’s all about the amazing people you meet on your journey that make your trip worthwhile! When you’re traveling with people you are less likely to make friends with random people, just because you’re more comfortable with your people. But when you’re alone, you kinda put yourself out there more and people approach you all the time. Every solo trip I have done, I have made at least a few friendships that will last a lifetime!

5. No complaining or arguing- OK, I’m just keeping it real, its just a fact. When you’re solo traveling you don’t have anyone to argue with, no one bitching about not wanting to do what you want or eat at the places you want. I know I can be pretty stubborn and like to do things my way, but so do other people, but this kinda cancels out all those unnecessary fights. I just believe you’re a nicer person and more your true self.

6.You can do whatever you want- without wasting time on other things that don’t interest you. As a solo traveler you are in complete control, this means everything you have planned to see and do, you can do! You even can take a day trip to a different country or add an extra destination without having to worry about the other people that can or can’t come with you because of things that are waiting for them back home. My last Euro trip I decided at 5am, a few hours before my flight that I also want to add Barcelona to my trip because if I’m already in Europe, why not! So I did!

7. You can take on any alter ego- Wanna pretend you’re British? Say you’re a Prince in Dubai? Say you’re Brazilian/Cuban, say you don’t speak another language to the people that are from your country and hear if they talk about you? lol DO IT! I love messing with random people all the time haha its fun! Once in New York, my friend Christine and I pretended that we were from London, had the accent and got free pizza and wine at my favorite restaurant in NYC and got into a roof top club that was hard to get into but they loved our silly accent! It’s a lot of fun and funny and will definitely give you stories to tell.

8.You will grow as a person and step up your confidence- I’ve always had a lot of self confidence since I was little. I developed it from moving so much as a kid, having to start over, making new friends and adapting to different atmospheres. I also do have a shy side, while traveling solo I have learned to force myself to be courageous. When traveling solo, your fear and courage play a big part, but as you push yourself to walk the streets alone or explore, you develop a certain confidence you didn’t know you had within you. You learn how sitting at a restaurant alone is actually not that bad and it’s actually nice and only when you come back to your comfort zone like back home do you see the change within you.

9.You can travel whenever you want to anywhere- One of my favorite things about traveling solo is the fact that I can just pick up my things and go with a very small time frame. I am very spontaneous, I can wake up tomorrow and say I wanna go to Peru! Research it, check flights, hotels and attractions, book my flight and 3 days later I‘m on that plane! Without really fitting around other peoples schedule. It’s seriously the best!

10.You will push yourself to do things out of your comfort zone– that you wouldn’t normally do! While in Sorrento, Italy my friend Anna, that I met on the trip got offered by a few nice Italian boys, who we met earlier in the day and then ran into them again, to go on their yacht with them in the middle of the night and go swimming. I was completely against it at first, thinking they would kidnap us and kill us lol but somehow they all talked me into it and it was a pretty fun time! I’m not saying take it to my extreme level lol but you will definitely get a chance to do many things out of your comfort zone that will make for great stories when you come back home. Like taking a subway in a foreign country, eating food you have never heard of before, or staying at a Hostel with complete strangers.

  9. I agree with all of these! Personally, I love traveling solo. It’s really not scary at all. I just got back from a 5 month backpacking trip around eastern Europe and I loved having the flexibility to just change my plans on a whim. Plus, it’s such a major self-confidence boost!

  10. It’s awesome that you do this! I would be open to traveling solo in the future. Right now I travel everywhere with my boyfriend, Justin, but if the opportunity presented itself at some point and he couldn’t go somewhere, I would definitely consider going alone!
