8 Of The Most Terrifying Places In The World
Welcome to the terrifying side of the world, where your unthinkable nightmares come to life! Some of these locations are plain disgusting, creepy, while others are just a strange world mystery. Get ready to be shocked cause these 8 most terrifying places in the world are just odd and scary, to say the lease.
1. The Door to Hell – Derweze, Ahal Province, Turkmenistan
Located in the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, welcome to HELL! The 230 foot-wide crater that never stops burning. The door to hell was originally created in 1971, after a few Soviet scientist were on the search for oil and hit the spot known as the door to hell now. The ground collapsed as they were drilling the platform, welcoming toxic and dangerous gas into the air, so they decided to light up the crater, hoping to make it go away. That didn’t turn out so well, ever since then, the crater has been burning for over 40 years! Terrifying, but cool! I’d love to see this life.
2. Snake Island (Ilha da Queimada Grande) – São Paulo, Brazil
Oh no! I said it, SNAKE ISLAND! Yes, snake island actually exists and it’s one of the most dangerous places in the world, only very few people in history ever survived this traumatic island and lived to tell the story. Located 90 miles from the coast of São Paulo, the island is 430,000-square-meter. In 1920, a lighthouse was built to warn travelers not to stop there, a man, his wife and 5 year old daughter were living there. During one supply trip to the island, the crew found the lighthouse abandoned with the front door opened and found the family dead. Many who have traveled there, say they have heard the young girls laughter in the wind. CREEPY! After that, a few developers tried to change the island into a banana plantation by burning the entire island to get rid of the snakes, but the snakes survived.
So how did this crazy island ever happen you ask? 11,000 years back, sea level rise separating the mainland and created what we know now as Snake Island. There is an insane amount of golden lancehead vipers. Due to its danger, the Brazilian government bans people from visiting Snake Island, although I suppose you can always rent a boat and go visit. I highly doubt you’ll make it out alive.
3. The Blue Hole – Belize
Anytime I see a photo from the Blue Hole in a bird’s eye view, it completely freaks me out! Something about that weird and random hole in the middle of nowhere, freaks out the life out of me, although I’ve considered visiting.
The Blue Hole is located 60 miles away from Belize’s coastline, with more than 400 feet deep and 1000 foot long. Scientist say it was formed when sea level dropped below the reef. Divers from all around the world say that this is listed on the top 10 diving locations in the world, but if you ask me, I still think it’s completely creepy.
4. The Bermuda Triangle
Awww the Bermuda Triangle, we’ve all heard about it and yet it’s just one of those world mysteries we still don’t have a real answer to. Located between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Florida lays one of nature’s greatest mysteries where MANY numbers of aircraft and ships have disappeared. Some people say it’s aliens, others think there is a magnetic force. One thing for sure, many have died fulfilling their curiosity of the Bermuda Triangle and some have survived to tell their odd encounter. One man said that he left The Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale Airport, when he encountered the Bermuda Triangle force, the weather changed dramatically and then he felt like he traveled through time, as he flew through a circle of clouds, landing in FFL in just 5 minutes. However, as odd and scary as the Bermuda Triangle may sound, some aircraft both commercial and private and cruise lines, still fly or sail through it.
5. Kawah Ijen Volcano- Java, Indonesia
The Kawah Ijen Volcano has an abnormal amount of gases that reach up to 1,000’F temperature as the heat comes through the cracks and in contact with air! But it also looks so damn beautiful.
6. Gomantong Caves- Borneo, Malaysia
Looks like your ordinary cave, but it’s far from that! The 300 feet high cave is home to over two million bats! The moment you enter you will immediately want to run out, as the bats start flying towards your way and the smell of bat poop is unbearable. If you can make it past the the cave, you might think you’re lucky, but not so much. On the other side of the cave you’ll encounter millions of Malaysian cockroaches. Highly not recommended. Even if you can get past the bats and disgusting cockroaches, you will then encounter anything from scorpions to large snakes and other poisonous creatures. #disgusting
7. Sedlec Ossuary – Kutná Hora, Czech Republic
The Sedlec Ossuary also known as The Bone Church is a small chapel located in the Cemetery Church of All Saints. It’s worldly known for its “creative” bone decor. In the early 1300’s, Sedlec Monastery brought back some soil from Jerusalem also known as the Holy Land. They scattered the sand all over the church and from that moment, everyone wanted to be buried there. The problem was overpopulation, which then leads to digging up the old bodies to make space for the new ones. In all essence, I’m sure you can guess what happened next…the bodies that were left over we used as decoration in the church. CREEPY! František Rint is the creator to this odd masterpiece, using over 40,000 human remains.
8. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Site- Ukraine
The town of Chernobyl is located near the borders with Russia and Belarus. The Soviets were developing a nuclear power site when things took an unexpected turn. On April 26, 1986, around 1 am, there was an accidental explosion and meltdown at the reactor that spun over 200 times the amount of radiation released. 600,000-800,000 firefighters and emergency workers came from all over the former Soviet Union to put out the fire, which took nearly 2 years to put out, but it was too late, the damage was already done. In result, over 7 million people were affected by this nuclear, including people from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. This place is the epitome of a ghost town. This site still to date, is very VERY dangerous, although some of the older locals still refused to leave the area because of old age and memories. I watched an interview earlier this year, where an elderly couple said, “This is all we have left”.
OVER TO YOU! WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ADDED ON THIS LIST?
LOVE IT? PIN IT!
Neat list! I would definitely prefer to have a travel companion to visit any of those places. What’s the most terrifying place you’ve been?
Alix
Thanks! Ya, I agree, these are not a solo trip to take. Ummmmm…It would have to be a holocaust memorial spot where a few thousands were shot and thrown into a river. I was alone and randomly stumbled upon it and nearly had a heart attack!
Facing My Fears, Holocaust Memorial — Budapest http://vanillaskydreaming.com/facing-fears-holocaust-memorial-budapest/
I don’t think I could handle any of these to be honest
The only one that I can’t handle is snake island. The rest would be interesting trips and I plan on going to Ijen in the next few years.
The bone church also freaks me out a little bit though.
wow crazy! please report back to me and let me know how it goes! I really wanna know!
